Makhana for diabetes

Makhana for diabetes

Makhana is also called fox nuts and lotus seeds. It grows from a plant called Euryale Fox, which grows in the stagnant water of wetlands or ponds in Eastern Asia. Makhans are used in Chinese medicines and cuisines from 3000 years ago and found an important place in Ayurveda too. In India also fox nuts have found its place from religious ceremonies to fasting dishes, to weight loss and to manage your blood sugar level. Makhanas are low in calories and they have become a popular snack too, which you can munch on happily. A 50 gm of makhana has 180 calories with no saturated fat and sodium.

Makhana for diabetes

Makhans are rich in carbohydrates and proteins. As fox nuts contain low glycemic foods, fox nuts help to maintain your blood sugar levels. Their glycemic index is lower than foods like bread and rice. Also, their less sodium and high magnesium content makes it beneficial for those who are suffering from diabetes and obesity. Lotus seeds are full of fibre and protein and also high in carbohydrates. If they are eaten in the right quantity and right manner then, makhans help to manage the blood sugar levels in the body.

How you can eat makhana if you are suffering from diabetes

1. Dry roasted fox nuts:

Put your makhanas on a non-stick pan and roast them on low flame until they are slightly golden brown. Once they are roasted, put them in an airtight container and place that container in a dry place.

2. Roast makhana with ghee:

If you are not averse to some healthy fat, then you may add a tablespoon of ghee to your pan, before putting the fox nuts in it. You can add a little bit of salt and chaat masala, but don’t add too many artificial or salty flavorings.
